テレマンと民族音楽 Telemann and Folk Music

2026年のラ・フォル・ジュルネで、”テレマンとポーランド”というプログラムを聴いた。

フランソワ・ラザレヴィチ率いる、レ・ミュジシャン・ド・サン=ジュリアンによる演奏だった。

当初は、テレマンの優雅なバロック音楽を期待していたのだが、ポーランド、ハンガリー、ルーマニアなどの民族音楽が多く、驚かされた。

ゲオルク・フィリップ・テレマンと言えば、ヘンデルやバッハと並ぶバロック音楽の大家で、86年の生涯の中で、4,000曲もの音楽を作曲したと言われている。

そのテレマンと民族音楽との関係は、これまで全く知らなかった。

テレマンは、1704年、23歳の時にポーランドにあったゾーラウの宮廷楽長として招かれたが、その際に、ポーランドらモラヴィア地方の民族音楽に触れて、大きな刺激を受けた。

自伝の中でテレマンは、演奏者たちの即興音楽のアイデアの豊富さに驚かされたことを書いている。

”（それらの音楽を）注意深く聴けば、8日間で一生分の音楽的アイデアを習得できるだろう。”

テレマンは、そうした音楽を写本（ロストック写本）に残し、また自らのその後の音楽にも数多く取り入れている。

ラ・フォル・ジュルネで聴いた音楽は、そうしたテレマンの音楽や、ロストック写本からの音楽、そしてその他の民族音楽たちだった。

クラシック音楽と民族音楽と言えば、ドヴォルザークなどの後期ロマン派のことをすぐに連想してしまっていたが、当然のことながら、それ以前から、大きな関係があったのだろう。

At the 2026 La Folle Journée festival, I attended a program titled "Telemann and Poland."

The performance was by Les Musiciens de Saint-Julien, led by François Lazarewicz.

Initially, I was expecting Telemann's elegant Baroque music, but I was surprised to find a lot of folk music from Poland, Hungary, and Romania.

Georg Philipp Telemann is a master of Baroque music, alongside Handel and Bach, and is said to have composed as many as 4,000 pieces of music during his 86-year life.

I had absolutely no idea about Telemann's connection to folk music until now.

In 1704, at the age of 23, Telemann was invited to serve as Kapellmeister at the court of Zorau in Poland, where he was greatly inspired by the folk music of Poland and the Moravian region.

In his autobiography, Telemann wrote about being surprised by the abundance of improvisational ideas from the performers.

"If you listen carefully (to that music), you could acquire a lifetime's worth of musical ideas in eight days."

Telemann preserved this music in manuscripts (the Rostock Manuscript) and incorporated much of it into his own later music.

The music I heard at La Folle Journée included Telemann's music, music from the Rostock Manuscript, and other folk music.

When thinking of classical music and folk music, I immediately thought of late Romantic composers like Dvořák, but naturally, there must have been a significant connection even before that.
