二人で一人の"レーモンド" Two people as one "Raymond"

建築家のアントニン・レーモンドのことは、軽井沢の聖パオロ教会などの建築家として、その業績はある程度知っていたが、その妻のノエミのことは、寡聞にも知らなかった。

ギャラリーエークワッドで行われた展覧会で、その生涯や業績などが紹介されていた。

ノエミはフランスのカンヌで生まれ、ニューヨークやパリで絵を学び、イラストや広告などの仕事をしていた。

ナポリからニューヨークへ向かう船上でアントニンと出会い、その後結婚。

ノエミの友人の紹介で、二人はフランク・ロイド・ライトのタリアセンで働くことになった。

その後の生涯は、アントニンの生涯とほとんど重なる。

二人の役割は、基本的にアントニンが建物の設計を行い、ノエミがインテリアや家具を担当するというものだったが、ノエミも設計を行うことがあった。

旧カニングハム邸や旧伊藤邸は、ノエミが建築から内部のインテリアまで行ったことがわかっている。他にもノエミが建築から行った例は、幾つもあるようだ。

ノエミは、日本の民藝運動にも深く興味を持ち、陶芸家の濱田庄司とも交友関係にあった。展示されていた家具やテキスタイルなどには、民藝の影響が感じられた。

ノエミは宗教にも深い関心を持っており、神智学協会の会員でもあった。

アントニン・レーモンドは、多くの教会を建築したが、とりわけノエミの役割は大きかった。

聖アンセルモ カトリック目黒教会は、二人の共同設計で、ノエミが担当した祭壇の斬新なデザインは、とりわけ印象的。

ノエミは、動物保護活動にも熱心で、野良犬を拾ってきては育てていて、周囲の人からは”動物保護のおばちゃん”と呼ばれていたという。

完璧主義者のアントニンは、自分の事務所の所員にも厳しく、小さなミスにもよく叱責していたが、ノエミはその所員を”あなたはよくやっているわよ。気にしないで。”と、さりげなくフォローしていた。

アントニンも、ノエミには絶大な信頼を寄せており、どの仕事にも彼女の意見を求めていた。

そうした意味では、ノエミとアントニンは、二人で一人の”レーモンド”と言っていいのかもしれない。

I was somewhat familiar with the architect Antonin Raymond, particularly his work on projects like the St. Paul's Church in Karuizawa, but I was unaware of his wife, Noemi.

An exhibition at Gallery A-Quad introduced her life and achievements.

Noemi was born in Cannes, France, studied art in New York and Paris, and worked in illustration and advertising.

She met Antonin on a ship from Naples to New York, and they later married.

Through a friend of Noemi's, they began working at Frank Lloyd Wright's Taliesin.

Their lives largely overlapped with Antonin's.

Their roles were generally that Antonin designed the buildings, while Noemi handled the interiors and furniture, although Noemi also occasionally designed.

It is known that Noemi handled everything from the architecture to the interior design of the former Cunningham House and the former Ito House. There appear to be several other examples where Noemi was involved in both the architecture and interior design.

Noemi had a deep interest in the Japanese folk art movement and was friends with the ceramic artist Shoji Hamada. The influence of folk art was evident in the furniture and textiles on display.

Noemi also had a deep interest in religion and was a member of the Theosophical Society.

Antonin Raymond designed many churches, and Noemi's role was particularly significant.

St. Anselm Catholic Meguro Church was a joint design by the two, and Noemi's innovative altar design is especially impressive.

Noemi was also passionate about animal welfare, adopting and raising stray dogs, and was known as "the animal welfare lady" by those around her.

Antonin, a perfectionist, was strict with his staff and often reprimanded them for small mistakes, but Noemi would subtly support them, saying, "You're doing well. Don't worry about it."

Antonin also placed immense trust in Noemi and sought her opinion on every project.

In that sense, Noemi and Antonin could be considered two halves of a single "Raymond."
