熊本を旅した記憶 Memories of traveling in Kumamoto

熊本城がテーマの展覧会が行われると聞いて、永青文庫を久しぶりに訪れた。

現在、熊本地震で受けた甚大な被害からの復興が行われているが、その最新の状況などと合わせて、加藤清正が築城して以来400年にわたる歴史を紹介する展示などが行われていた。

熊本城を訪れたのは、2024年9月のことだった。

熊本の地は、昔からいつかは行ってみたい、憧れの地の一つだった。

熊本城は、間違いなく、その理由の一つではあった。

私が訪れた時は、勿論まだ熊本城の復旧中の途上であったが、見学のためのコースも整備されていて、まだまだ石垣から崩れ落ちたまま散乱した石などを見ながら、天守台まで登ることができた。

加藤清正の熊本城を引き継いだ細川幽斎が、古今伝授を受けたという建物が京都から水前寺公園に移して残されており、その古今伝授の様子に想いを馳せることもできた。

熊本は、松江を離れたラフカディオ・ハーンが、英語教師として過ごした地でもある。

その旧宅跡も訪れることができた。

江戸時代の細川藩邸跡に建っている、永青文庫の展示室を巡りながら、そうしたことごとなどを、思い出していた。

熊本城の全ての施設の復旧が終わるのは、何と2052年になるという。

それも、400年という熊本城の歴史の中では、それほど長い年月とは言えないのかもしれない。

Hearing about an exhibition themed on Kumamoto Castle, I visited the Eisei Bunko Museum for the first time in a long while.

Currently, reconstruction is underway following the devastating damage caused by the Kumamoto earthquake. The exhibition showcased the latest progress in this reconstruction, along with displays detailing the 400-year history of the castle since its construction by Kato Kiyomasa.

My visit to Kumamoto Castle was in September 2024.

Kumamoto had always been one of my dream destinations.

Kumamoto Castle was undoubtedly one of the reasons for this.

When I visited, the castle was still under reconstruction, of course, but a viewing course had been established, allowing me to climb to the castle tower base, passing by scattered stones that had still crumbled from the stone walls.

The building where Hosokawa Yusai, who inherited Kumamoto Castle from Kato Kiyomasa, received the Kokin Denju (a secret teaching of classical Japanese poetry), has been moved from Kyoto to Suizenji Park and remains there, allowing one to imagine the scene of that teaching.

Kumamoto is also where Lafcadio Hearn, after leaving Matsue, spent time as an English teacher.

I was also able to visit the site of his former residence.

While touring the exhibition rooms of the Eisei Bunko, built on the site of the Edo-period Hosokawa clan residence, I recalled these things.

It is said that the restoration of all facilities at Kumamoto Castle will not be completed until 2052.

Even so, in the context of Kumamoto Castle's 400-year history, that may not seem like such a long time.
