アンドリュー・ワイエスのこと About Andrew Wyeth

東京都美術館で行われた、アンドリュー・ワイエス展を見た。

ワイエスのことを知ったのは、1990年に今はなき池袋のセゾン美術館で行われた展覧会だった。

ヘルガという女性の表情を緻密に描いた肖像画が、とても印象的だった。

ニューヨークのMOMAを訪れた時には、ワイエスの代表作である”クリスティーナの世界”を見ることができた。

何年か前に、丸沼芸術の森が持っているデッサン、水彩画のコレクションの巡回展があったが、行くことができず、それがとても心残りだった。

今回の展覧会では、丸沼芸術の森の作品も数多く展示されて、その気持ちは少しは安らいだ。

ワイエスは、ポップアート、抽象画などの時代の流れとは距離を置いて、自分が暮らす土地やそこに住む人々の姿を描き続けた。

とりわけ、テンペラによって描かれた作品は、髪の毛の一本一本、草原の草の葉の一枚一枚まで、克明に描かれている。

ワイエスは、描くテーマやそこに描きたいものによって、テンペラの他に、水彩、ドライブッシュなどを使い分けた。

クリスティーナをはじめとする普通の人々や自然を描いた作品は、アメリカでも多くの人々を惹きつけているが、日本でも、その作品を愛する人が多い。

ワイエスの作品を見ていると、描かれている対象だけでなく、その背景に精神的なものが描かれているように思えてくる。

おそらく、こうしたことが、日本でもワイエスの絵が好まれる理由の一つなのだろう。

I saw the Andrew Wyeth exhibition at the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum.

I first learned about Wyeth at an exhibition held at the now-defunct Sezon Museum in Ikebukuro in 1990.

I was deeply impressed by his portrait of a woman named Helga, meticulously depicting her facial expression.

When I visited MoMA in New York, I was able to see Wyeth's masterpiece, "Christina's World."

Several years ago, there was a traveling exhibition of drawings and watercolors from the Marunuma Art Forest collection, but I was unable to attend, which I deeply regretted.

This exhibition featured many works from the Marunuma Art Forest, which eased my disappointment somewhat.

Wyeth distanced himself from the trends of the time, such as Pop Art and abstract painting, and continued to depict the land where he lived and the people who inhabited it.

In particular, his tempera paintings are remarkably detailed, capturing every strand of hair and every blade of grass in a meadow.

Wyeth used tempera, watercolor, and dry brush, depending on the theme and what he wanted to depict.

His works, depicting ordinary people like Christina and nature, have attracted many people in America, and his art is also beloved in Japan.

Looking at Wyeth's works, one gets the feeling that not only the subjects are depicted, but also something spiritual is portrayed in the background.

Perhaps this is one of the reasons why Wyeth's paintings are so popular in Japan.
